2 Xtreme is a racing game released for the Sony PlayStation in 1996. It was sponsored by ESPN. In it, the player races against others in numerous events around the world: Rollerblading, skateboarding, biking, and snowboarding. Locales include Africa, Japan, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, and each locale has three tracks each. Tricks of different difficulties can be performed during the race to gain points and different-colored gates can be passed through for a variety of purposes. Normal gates may be used to gain speed, to jump higher, guarantee knockdowns in one punch/kick or to regain health. After passing through one of these gates a player can activate the ability by pressing 'L2'. Other gates are simply for points and are as follows: Green gates award 500 points, red 250 and yellow 150.

Players can also punch and kick opponents to knock them down. They are awarded points for this; 150 for each time they knock a player down. Health dictates how easily a player can be knocked over by an obstacle or other racer, and decreases when a player holds 'X' to accelerate. For most of the course a player will hold 'O' to simply glide and maintain speed without health decreasing. 2 Xtreme has 4 difficulty levels. As the difficulty increases so does the maximum speed of the player and number of pedestrians and vehicles in the way throughout the race. The pedestrians and vehicles only appear in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas tracks.

There are 10 character models with set names, however players can choose to create their own character based on one of the models. They can choose the characteristics and abilities of the character, and rename it. A player can choose in the options to race without the other computer characters, and also turn off fighting.

On 2 Xtreme a player can either do a normal 'Exhibition' race or a season which involves all 12 tracks and creates standings based on the score the player achieves in each track. The score is calculated mainly by the time the player finishes in and place in the race. Points from gates, knockdowns and tricks are then added to this. On 2-Player mode both for Exhibitions and Seasons the screen is split horizontally and both players start at the back of the race. This makes the game a little more difficult as it becomes harder to see and avoid the obstacles in your path. Obstacles in the game include bollards, lampposts, gate-posts, vehicles, trees and animals.
