[edit] Summary
A pivotal scene from the denouement of Robert E. Howard's "Jewels of Gwahlur" short story in which Conan rescues Muriela from the Servants of Bit-Yakin.
This is a reduced / cropped digital scan I made of a widespread Conan painting in The Conquering Sword of Conan by artist Gregory Manchess. I believe that given the reduced size of the image, the web resolution colors, the black and white palette, and its encyclopedic usage, this image may be utilized for Wikipedia under Fair Use. Note that this same painting, albeit at a much larger size, may be found on Google, Amazon.com and public websites promoting / illustrating the work of Mr. Manchess; in particular, his Conan illustrations for Del Rey.
After carefully browsing the Wikipedia copyright categories, I have selected "a single panel from the interior of a single issue of a comic book" as being the closest to what this image qualifies as. More correctly, this image is a panel not from a comic book, but a digital scan from The Conquering Sword of Conan, a semi-illustrated compilation containing the unedited Conan stories of Robert E. Howard.
Feel free to update the licensing category I selected for this image if you believe there is a more appropriate Wikipedia copyright category.
[edit] Fair Use Rationale for Jewels of Gwahlur
- The image is a popular depiction of the subject matter in question.
- The image is used here for encyclopedic purposes and in no way limits the ability of the artist(s) to market their product.
- The image is presented as a low resolution copy of the original.
- The image was released to the media via the internet to promote the original product in which it appeared.
- The image is arguably significant and was created by a notable artist: Gregory Manchess.
- No free alternative can exist given that Conan and Hyboria are trademarked and thus protected.
