Area of a circle, vs disk:

While it is correct to say that a circle has no area (it is just a line), the word 'disk' doesnt seem widely used to describe a geometric shape. (A disk is a real-world object of course). Seems to me that the best desription of the area we mean here is to say the 'area enclosed by a circle'.

This fits in well with other objects, such as all the triangles, quadrilaterals etc. In those cases we can say for example "the area enclosed by a trapezoid" without having to come up with a new name for a trapezoid-shaped physical object.

So I have edited the external link to match, and I will edit the Mathopenref article too. But I think the title of the article needs to be fixed also. Thoughts?

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the external links you added to the page Area do not comply with our guidelines for external links. [edit] Please stop

Please stop adding links to www.mathopenref.com. You add too many, and Wikipedia is not a repository of external links. Thanks. If you continue, I may remove all the links to www.mathopenref.com from all mathematics articles (that is easy enough to do with a bot). Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 02:02, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mathopenref

Oleg You complain about links to mathopenref. The reason the material is not in Wikipedia itself is that I use Java animations a lot, and when I put them in wikipedia pages they are deleted because Java applets are not approved. So what should I do? I am certainly not a commercial venture ( I wish it were so). I stand to gain no commercial value from my work.

Perhaps there are too many links. I will remove some a cut down to just a few. But my intentions are simply to add value.

Perhaps we should all should start to think about how to move Wikipedia math articles beyond just static text and on to the next stage. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.6.151.150 (talkcontribs).

Yes, I think it is a good idea not to have more than one or two links to this site in each relevant article. Otherwise things are unbalanced. About moving Wikipedia beyond text, well, I think Java is no longer the hot thing it used to be for interactive web programming, and many computers don't have Java preinstalled. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:05, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

OK, agreed. I'll reduce the number of links. Java: what else is there? I need graphics, power, speed.
