[edit] Radio Stations, NEK

Thank you for your quality contributions to the NEK media/radio section. Improved it enormously. Having said that, I commented out radio stations that were not in the NEK. Right now we have it defined precisely as the northeastern three counties of Vermont. The article in fact is part of Wikipedia Vermont. So it wouldn't include NH nor Rutland. I was wondering why some stations highlighted? This is not explained. I will remove those unless you choose to explain them. Thanks.Student7 11:35, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. At least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to WXXS, was not constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. Katieh5584 21:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Self-Correcting Own Articles

(text copied from User talk:DESiegel so that response is clear) WXXS article edited. I did not understand what you meant when you said it was not okay to talk about one's "own" article. Does that mean that the article may be edited by anyone excluding its original creator. Whatever the rules, I decided that I went overboard on the opinionated comments and made my own personal strides to tone the article down. I deleted an entire section, a couple sentences, and words and-or phrases I thought sounded non-neutral.

You are perfectly free to edit articles that you created, just as any other editor is. What I meant is that many editors who speak about "my article" want to "own" the article, and prevent other editors from working on it, or have a right of veto on other people's edits. That is what the policy page WP:OWN says is not acceptable, and that is why saying "my article" is frowned on. If "my article" means only "the article i have created and worked on" there is not a problem, but too many use it for "the article I control". That is the problem. Correcting or improving your own edits is a very good idea, and many editors do it all the time. DES (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I am very new to Wikipedia so to me it feels like I am doing things wrong all the time. Than whenever I try to make things right it feels like I am still wrong. But fear not, I am not a hostile editor. More so, I am just a confused editor with close-to-average understanding of writen language. My articles are fairly simple, were not meant to be essays, and based from my special interest so sometimes I will get a little carried away.

Everyone goes through that stage -- some editors never get out of it. The nice thing about a wiki is tha anything can and will be fixed if it is in any way wrong. DES (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

One thing I did when I didn't know any better was remove a speedy deletion flag tag from an article that I was the author of and proceeded to edit the article. Than about 30 minutes later I skimmed a passage that said that all people other than the article's author may delete this tag. NOW I think I see what you meant when you wrote, "it is bad form to speak of [my] article". When I first read that comment, it shocked me and I did not understand it right away. I just got embarrassed and felt like I was being "yelled at".

I am so sorry you felt yelled at, it was meant to be a friendly tip. DES (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I never really learned how to communicate with other Wikipedia users. I am not very computer savvy. I don't even know how to use Instant Messimer (IM). But I did take all your comments in stride and made my own golden rule in my own words: "Avoid using words that sound opinionated." I did away with terms such as "loosely-formatted", "broad-appeal", "extensive", as such because I do feel that those are not the best words to include in a neutral article.

That is a good rule, it is pretty much the heart of our neutral point of view policy, although you would do well to read the whole policy page. You are doing just fine in communicating with me. There is no need to use IM, and I never do on Wikipedia matters. Three minor points: 1) you might find it easier if you create an account and log in using it. This will mean that all your edits made when logged in will be identified with your username (which you may choose) rather than your IP address (which may change based on what your ISP does). See the welcome section above for more info. 2) when you refer to an article, it is helpful to link it, like WXXS. You do this by patting the exact name in double square brackets, like this [[WXXS]]. 3) Please sign your posts on discussion pages (not on articles) with four tildes (~~~~). The software will convert this to your IP address, (or your username if you are logged in, or your signature if you are logged in and have specifed a signature), plus a timestamp. See my signature that follows. DES (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I am actually crossing my fingers that you don't get mad at me and am hoping that by pure chance hopefully I have done something right. I know that's a long shot but hopefully I am on target now. If you are not still mad with me, please me some pointers to follow in the future when writing articles. If you were not "mad", just know that I interpreted anger. Again, a communication break-up. Anyhow, I hope you are satisfied with my changes.

I am not in the least mad, and I am very sorry that I sounde mad to you. You are doing fine, and on a brief look it seems as if your edits to WXXS are good ones. You are new here, and i was and am trying to pass on soem useful pointers, that is all. my apoligies for having sounded angry, I was just trying to warn you that a very natural way of speaking ("my article") would be seen neagatively and as implying things you probably didn't mean by a good many people here. Thank You For Your Time.

You are very welcome. Thank you for contributing. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have on my talk page, as you did with this one. DES (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
