[edit] Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my Talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome!
Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. SD31415 (SIGN HERE) 17:13, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] your recent edits
Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! You recently added an external link to YouTube in an article. It has been removed because the link pointed to a non-encyclopedic source. Per WP:COPYRIGHT: External sites can possibly violate copyright. Linking to copyrighted works is usually not a problem, as long as you have made a reasonable effort to determine that the page in question is not violating someone else's copyright. If it is, please do not link to the page. Knowingly and intentionally directing others to a site that violates copyright has been considered a form of copyright infringement in the United States (Intellectual Reserve v. Utah Lighthouse Ministry). Also, linking to a page that illegally distributes someone else's work sheds a bad light on Wikipedia and its editors. If the site in question is making fair use of the material, linking is fine. Please refer to Wikipedia's policy on external links for more information. |

- Please let me know what's wrong with adding a link direct to TVOntario, the producer of the show. I see no violation according to Wikipedia rules ***

- You are adding a link to copyrighted video. Please read WP:COPYVIO, and stop adding links. JoeSmack Talk 18:11, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

- Yes, the video is copyrighted, but it's being disseminated (ie, published) by the copyright holder (TVOntario) on their own web site. Microsoft owns the copyright to all of the content on their web site, but there is nothing wrong with linking to Microsoft on Wikipedia. I'm putting _one_ link back (because I suspect that's the only way to "contact" you (if there's another way, please let me know). Please advise on this page if you think this violates [[WP::COPYVIO]], and if so, why. Thanks.

- Those make sense for the links to YouTube. I agree, that could be a copyright infingement. The new links to the TVOntario website don't match your compaint. TVO is the owner of the copyright. They are making it publicly available. Are you saying that they're violating their own copyright by making the video available?

- I don't see why I'm not allowed to link to it. TVO has no policy forbidding it and neither does Wikipedia. Putting link back.

[edit] Johnny Weissmuller page
Why did you write that Johnny Weissmuller was born "in the village of Timisoara, Romania"? First of all, Timisoara is not a village, but a big city, and second, he was not born in Timisora, but in the village of Medja, Serbia, which is, in fact, very close to Timisoara. This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users.
