Hi - thanks for the work on British aircraft-related topics! You might like to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft, the informal attempt to co-ordinate these efforts on the 'pedia. Since you seem to come here a bit, you might like to create an user account, which will make it easier to communicate with other wikipedians. Cheers! --Rlandmann 22:23, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Your work at Flower Class corvette should probably be incorporated into Flower class corvette (note the capitalisation difference). -- Grunt   ҈  16:23, 2004 Sep 12 (UTC)

Same with Landing Craft - there's already an article under Landing craft. Please note that Wikipedia only uses capital letters in article titles very sparingly. I'd like to invite you again to create a user account (it's free! see link above). --Rlandmann 13:06, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

It's great that you're adding lots of articles on specific ships, but I wonder if you could make them a little more article-like - with complete sentences and perhaps a bit of context, instead of just snippets of information. Consider MV Rapana: The article doesn't even say what country owned her, or why she was converted (from the date it's obvious that it was for WWII, but we shouldn't make readers infer such important information). Casual readers coming across the article would be completely baffled; it would only make sense to people who already knew all about the subject! - DavidWBrooks 20:02, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Please note that by convention, British and Commonwealth air squadrons are linked here in the form "No. 123 Squadron", not "No 123 Squadron" (note the "."). --Rlandmann 12:34, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Articles titles should be written in the singular. To create a link one can use [[corvette]]s which will give corvettes. See Wikipedia:Manual of style Dunc_Harris| 16:11, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Not sure why you're so resistant to the idea of [[creating an user account, but anyway... Given the subject areas you're contributing to, it might be handy to familiarise yourself with the naming conventions for aircraft and ships, and, more generally, the Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory. --Rlandmann 21:55, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

In particular, please note that years of commissioning or pennant numbers are only suffixed to ship names when there's a need to disambiguate them. If there's been only one ship named HMS Foo, then that's what the article should be called. Of course, if there's more than one, then the HMS Foo page needs to disambiguate to HMS Foo (1916) and HMS Foo (1943) as necessary. --Rlandmann 22:24, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi again. A few more pointers:

  • By convention, the subject of an article is mentioned in the first sentence of an article, and is bolded. Thus:
HMS Venerable was a Pre-Dreadnought battleship of the Royal Navy.
should read:
HMS Venerable was a Pre-Dreadnought battleship of the Royal Navy.
  • Please add new articles to the appropriate category. Naval ships are categorised according to flag and type, for example "Category:Royal Navy battleships" (note plural) "Category:United States Navy destroyers" etc. Ship classes go under "Category:Ship classes". You add a category by just typing (eg) [[Category:Royal Navy frigates]] at the bottom of your article before saving it.
  • Finally, it would be really nice if you could write in complete sentences. Remember that the ultimate goal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia.

[edit] ukrailways.wikicities.com

I've started a new wiki at wikicities to concentrate on the history of railways in the UK. This will in time, hopefully, provide a space to greatly expand on what is available on wikipedia. For example, individual pages for locomotives, signal boxes and the like. I've picked on you as a likely contributor from looking at the edit history for the SR and then at your personal edit history.

At the moment I am busy seeding the wiki with pages from wikipedia, with a few minor edits, before annoucing its existance to the wider railway world. I'm contacting a few people who seen to edit railway articles on wikipedia at first, as they are already enthusiastic about the wiki system. I would be interested in you views on how I can move it forward and the structure of the wiki. I'll keep an eye on this talk page, my talk page or you could email me at richard_bedwell@hotmail.com
