User talk:209.78.98.27

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | rangeblocks | unblock | contribs | deleted contribs) has asked to be unblocked, but an administrator has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock request while you are blocked.

Request reason: "This IP address is the Los Angeles Central Public Library public computer bank. This server has over 50 computers linked to this address. Each computer is reserved per hour and used by thousands of people each week. This computer bank is essential to Los Angeles residents who have no computer. Blocking this address is denying thousands of Los Angeles Central Library registered Wikipedia users their right to edit inaccurate information they find in Wikipedia. Remember, this address is 50 public computers on one server."

Decline reason: "If you are using a shared IP to edit Wikipedia, please create an account so that you can continue to edit even if the underlying IP is blocked. This block is entirely justified given the extraordinary amount of damage being done to articles from this IP. However I have changed the block so that account creation is enabled during the last 24 hours of its existence. Gwernol 02:35, 5 April 2007 (UTC)"

Please make any further unblock requests by using the {{unblock}} template. However, abuse of the template may result in your talk page being protected.

Attention:

This IP address, 209.78.98.27, is registered to Los Angeles Public Library, and may be shared by multiple users. If the organization uses proxy servers or firewalls, this IP address may in fact represent many users at many physical computers.

For this reason, a message intended for one person may be received by another and a block may be shared by many. If you are editing from this address and are frustrated by irrelevant messages, you can avoid them by creating an account for yourself. In some cases, you may temporarily be unable to create an account due to efforts to fight vandalism; if so, please see here.

If you are autoblocked repeatedly, we encourage you to contact your Internet service provider or IT department and ask them to contact Wikimedia's XFF project about enabling X-Forwarded-For HTTP headers on their proxy servers so that our editing blocks will affect only the intended user. Alternatively, you can list the IP at Wikipedia:WikiProject on XFFs.

Caution should be used when blocking this IP or reverting its contributions without checking - if a block is needed, administrators should consider using a soft block with the template {{anonblock|optional comment}} as the block reason.

Note: In the event of vandalism from this address, abuse reports may be sent to your network administrator for further investigation.
IT staff who want to monitor vandalism from this IP address can subscribe to a web feed of this page in either RSS or Atom format.

I've unblocked this account according to the post that this is a library proxy, please keep that information displayed at the top of the page so that any blocks that may occur later may permit account creation and editing under accounts accessing Wikipedia via this library. [edit] User is blocked

You have been blocked from editing Wikipedia for a period of 99 hours as a result of your disruptive edits. You are free to make constructive edits after the block has expired, but please note that vandalism (including page blanking or addition of random text), spam, deliberate misinformation, privacy violations, personal attacks; and repeated, blatant violations of our neutral point of view policy will not be tolerated.

[edit] Blocking the L.A. Central Library

The current block has, since Sunday, prevented editors from one of the U.S.'s largest public information resources from editing, not only anonymously, but under their registered user names. The best kind of editor (those able to source their edits), has been blocked for four days due to the edits of one easily-reverted vandal. Not all of these editors want to advertise their ISP by requesting unblocking at their talk pages. The administrator (User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me) who put this block has not only deprived Wikipedia of four days' worth of good edits, he has caused ill-will towards the project in general due to the lack of consistency in which these sorts of punitive measures are given. One wonders whose agenda is better served by this block, the easily-reverted vandal, or the administrator? 209.78.98.27 17:14, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

We've all seen vandals go unpunished for days on end, and now we have hundreds of potentially valuable editors blocked from using their registered user names for 4 days, due to one vandal. Was this done out of incompetence or arrogance? 209.78.98.27 17:43, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
The answer appears to be arrogance. I have contributed to Wikipedia for years, always meticulously sourcing my edits. I have used some of this block period to look at random articles here, and see vast areas of unsourced blather from unblocked contributors. I see unsourced errors being put into articles I contribute to. I could fix them, with sourcing, right now, if not for the block. (personal attacks removed). Thank you clown, for showing us all the validity of that well-earned reputation. 209.78.98.27 19:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Whatever the merits of your argument, I can promise you that loosing a tirade of personal attacks is extremely counterproductive to your chances of being unblocked. It is unlikely that this is a single person using the library computers, given the wide range of articles vandalized and the length of time over which this vandalism has occurred. If you do not wish to be blocked along with the other users of this IP, you should register an account. Its free and requires no personal information. Users with accounts can usually continue to edit Wikipedia even if the underlying IP address gets blocked thanks to the work of vandals. Gwernol 02:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

As the above editor stated, registered accounts are blocked under this block. The editor's tone may be questionable, but his frustration is certainly understandable. Registered users at a major city's major information resource are being blocked because of anonymous vandals. If Wikipedia wants sourced edits, how is it to Wikipedia's advantage to block editor in universities and libraries? Isn't that where the sources are? Blocking anonymous vandals is understandable. Extending that block to registered accounts harms Wikipedia in more ways than one. 209.78.98.27 02:38, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Registered users at this address can now edit. However looking at the last 50 edits made from this IP I see nothing but vandalism, and not one of these valuable sourced edits that you keep claiming are made with great frequency from the library. Gwernol 02:41, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
It's probably a moot point by now. It seems that this action has made enemies out of more than one good editor. I, for one won't edit here again. And I doubt the previous editor will either. If claiming sour grapes makes you feel better. So be it. 209.78.98.27 02:49, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
