I am not Shona, but Kalanga in Botswana. I believe the correct name is Mwene Matapa. 'Mwene Matapa' means "You the owner, to whom we have given". The word 'mwene' means owner. The verb 'ku-pa' means 'to give'. 'Ta-pa' means 'we have given'.

You can compare the phrase with 'mwene ma ta bona' or 'mwene ma ta wona' meaning 'You the owner, whom we have seen'.

Therefore Mwene Matapa, in my opinion means the direct opposite of the widely held belief of "conquering". Instead it expresees a central authority to whom the citizenry voluntarily pays tax or collective revenue.
