[edit] Host City Election
PASO selected the city by unanimous acclamation as the host for 16th Pan American Games on Sunday, May 28, 2006. Guadalajara was the only city to officially bid for the 2011 Pan American Games. This may have been in part due to no announced/open candidature period for the event.
Other potential bids could have come from:
- San Antonio, Texas (USA)--who bid for the 2007 Games which ultimately were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil;
- Cali (Colombia)--previously hosted the Games in 1971; and
- Detroit, Michigan (USA).
