[edit] excised summary of 2007 race

In 2007, this race was won by Lewis Hamilton, in his first season in the top formula. Hamilton started from pole position on the grid; it was his first Formula One victory and the first Formula One race won by a black driver. Second place was taken by Nick Heidfeld and Alexander Wurz was third, making it the first Grand Prix of the 2007 season that drivers from teams other than Ferrari and McLaren achieved podium positions.

In 2007, the race had an unprecedented four safety car periods.[1] It also included a violent impact by Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber against a concrete retaining wall, from which he suffered a sprained ankle and concussion. During the race Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella were disqualified for failing to stop at the end of the pit lane when the exit was closed.
