- 17 January - South Africa is selected as the host of sub-region's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre. Included in the sub-region are Angola, Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique and Namibia

- A large scale Community Survey is conducted in all provinces by the Statistics South Africa
- 6-8 February - President of the People's Republic of China, Hu Jintao, visits South Africa
- 23 February - The South African Courts dismiss charges against Simon Mann, former British Army officer, security expert and mercenary, and 7 other suspected mercenaries.

- 2 May - A Zimbabwean court rules that Simon Mann, former British Army officer, security expert and mercenary, be extradited to Equatorial Guinea to face charges of leading a failed coup d'etat

- 4 January - Marais Viljoen, former State President of South Africa, dies in Pretoria from heart failure at the age of 91
- 9 January - Elmer Symons, motorcyclist, dies of injuries sustained in a crash during the fourth stage of the 29th Dakar Rally
- 18 October - Lucky Dube, reggae singer, aged 43, was shot dead in Rosettenville suburb of Johannesburg[1]
- 20 November - Ian Smith, Prime Minister of Rhodesia, aged 88.
