The 1st Canadian Regiment was raised on November 19, 1775 at Pointe-Olivier, Quebec for service with the Continental Army. They saw action at the Battle of Fort St-Jean, Battle of Trois-Rivières, Battle of Quebec (1775), Fort Stanwix and the Battle of Rhode Island. The regiment was disbanded January 1, 1781 at King's Ferry, New York. Pointe-Olivier is now called Saint-Mathias and is on the Richelieu River near the Fort Chambly.

The 1st Canadian Regiment of James Livingston was composed of French-Canadians, Acadian and American colonists living in Quebec. It fought with Benedict Arnold at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. This crucial victory by the Americans led to a full French alliance with the Americans four months later in February 1778. Until this point, France only provided funds.
