1st Bangalore Pioneers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1st Bangalore Pioneers are a fictional regiment of the British Indian Army, mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes short story The Adventure of the Empty House by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The villain of the story, Colonel Sebastian Moran, formerly served with the regiment.

As Bangalore was in the Madras Presidency, the 1st Bangalore Pioneers may be intended to represent the historical 1st Regiment of Madras Native Infantry, who were first designated as Pioneers in 1883 (though this was after Moran had retired from the Army). This regiment became the 61st Pioneers when the separate armies of Madras, Bengal and Bombay were combined in 1903.

The Corps of Pioneers (also referred to as Pioneer Corps), which since have been separated from the Engineer Corps (Madras,Bombay and Bengal Engineer groups) have their Regimental Centre at Bangalore.
