[edit] Summary
3D rotating image of Gramicidin A. See ref: Lomize, A.L., Orekhov, V.I.u., Arsen`ev, A.S. Refinement of the spatial structure of the gramicidin A ion channel Biol.Membr.(USSR) v18 pp.182-200, 1992
The apparent "bulkiness" or distortion found in the side chains is a result of uncertainty in the crystal structure - a feature found in many crystal structures but especially pronounced in proteins.
