1 Canadian Air Division (1 Cdn Air Div) is the command and control centre of the Canadian Forces' Air Command (AIRCOM).
Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1 Cdn Air Div is also the headquarters for the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) and commands all 13 wings of AIRCOM and oversees the monitoring of Canada's airspace in support of the nation's commitments to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).
1 Cdn Air Div is staffed by 600 regular and reserve force members at all times. In addition to military personnel the headquarters is also assisted by civilian personnel in the Operational Research and Analysis Directorate (ORAD).
The official abbreviation for the division used in memos and internal documents is 1 Cdn Air Div although prior to 2006 it was known as 1 CAD. The abbreviation was changed due to the negative connotations of the term "cad".[citation needed]
