[edit] Scope of this template

I think this template should be limited to those books which were considered children's literature in the 19th century. This after all is the name of the template, but I disagree that all titles listed actually fit this description.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 17:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Content of Template

This template is very large and provides so much information it is not very useful. I would suggest that it contain only three main links Authors; Representive Titles; Illustrators. Also there titles should be linked to an article on the subject (i.e. 19th-Century British Children's Literature). With the template pared down to being a useful navigation aid the disclaimers can be gotten rid of also.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 17:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm the guy who created the template. Thanks for your message. The three-link idea makes a lot of sense--I too was worrying about the template looking too busy, but didn't realize it could be made modular! And I was thinking about starting an article with that title, but didn't get around to doing it. If you'd like to create a stub, you're welcome; otherwise, I will do it later today.

I agree too that the titles should reflect 19th century perceptions. Which titles don't fit? I'm happy to change them, or do away with an author altogether. (I should add that by "children," I mean what today would include "children" and "juvenile.") I know that "The Daisy Chain" was more of a family novel, and "Black Beauty" was not written as a children's book, but which other titles did you have in mind?

Actually I first stumbled on this template as it was added to Kim (novel) which I don't believe was originally considered children's lit and is technically a 20th century work as well (1901 but I wouldn't quibble that). I just now realized that it is not actually listed on the template itself. I do think Black Beauty should be removed. A few things could be added from Kiplings works depending on how much you want to push the date. The Second Jungle Book (1895) ; Stalky and Co (1899); Just So Stories (1902) ; Puck of Pook's Hill (1906). Those works I think were considered at least "juvenile" at the time, and most literature still feels 19th Century until the culture shock of WWI IMHO.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 18:54, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Stalky and Co abd The Second Jungle Book are questionable as I think about it. I never read those particular stories so I should not give an authoritative opinion there. I would have to read up some on it but they may be in the juvenlile category.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 19:03, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I've created the "new" template with the three links, as per your suggestion. It definitely looks much better. So, thanks! In the old version, I only had one title per author--that is why I had the Jungle Book, but not the Second Jungle Book. The new titles list is on the longish side. I've tried to include the popular titles (and there are many). In the coming weeks, I'll try to create stubs for the "red" ones and scan an illustration or two. Please feel free to jump in.

As for the Kipling books, I've read both the Second Jungle Book and Stalky & Co. and they are definitely both kids books (i.e. children's/juvenile), although they have all kinds of scholarly grown-up interpretations. And yes I agree that Just So Stories and Puck of Pook's Hill should be included too. Let me know what you think of the new format and lists. Sanjay Tiwari 12:58, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Too short

I think it'll be better to add links to the most famous authors of this century to this template... --Yuriy Lapitskiy 08:51, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

That's the way it used to be and it has been shrunk down to this over time. Dont' forget the links are still there but in another form. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 11:09, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
I see... Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Yuriybrisk (talkcontribs) 12:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC).
