1992 Orissa liquor deaths

1992 Orissa liquor deaths is case of death of more than 200 people in May 1992 in Cuttack in Orissa state in India by drinking illegally brewed poisionous liquor.About 600 people were hospitalised. It is one of the biggest tragedies of its kind in India.
Since then, several women's organisations in the state have been demanding total prohibition on the sale and manufacture of liquor. Then state government imposed a ban on alcohol in 1994 however the Indian National Congress government that came to power in 1995 lifted prohibition on the ground that it was causing huge revenue losses. In 2000 the police arrested hooch kingpin Surendranath Das, alias Belu, in the case.
