The 1987 Giro d'Italia of cycling was held from May 21 to June 13, 1987, consisting of 22 stages. It was won by Stephen Roche. The defending champion Roberto Visentini returned to the Giro with a powerful Carrera Jeans-Vagabond team to win his second Giro. Visentini took the maglia rosa at the prologue but his teammate Stephen Roche won an eight km downhill time trial from Poggio di Sanremo to Sanremo. When the Carrera team won the team time trial, Roche took the leaders jersey leading to a terrible rivalry between the him and Visentini. Roche lost the jersey to Visentini after the stage 13 individual time trial but on the stage from Lido di Jesolo to Sappada, Roche, contravening the team's orders[1], broke away alone early in the day and despite being caught late in the race, had the strength to go with the counterattack and take the pink jersey from his team mate Roberto Visentini. For having attacked his teammate in the stage, Roche gained him the tifosi's hatred.[2] It was said that the only member of his team that Roche could rely on not to ride against him in the Giro was domestique Eddy Schepers, although Roche recruited the support of the Panasonic riders and ACBB teammates of old friends Robert Millar and Australian Phil Anderson to encircle and protect him with Schepers on the pivotal Marmolada climb (a day known as the "Marmolade Massacre"). Roche cemented his first grand tour win with winning the final individual time trial on stage 22 into Saint-Vincent.
