1984 Masters Snooker
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1984 Benson and Hedges Masters took place between January 22 and January 28, 1984 at the Wembley Conference Centre. The Masters, now in it's 10th year turned the format into a championship for the game's Top 16 players from the start of that season (This years would be from the positions from after the 1983 World Championship). The BBC which televises the competition also extended their coverage to 7 days by televising all the matches from the Last 16 and beyond. The prize money was also more than double what it was the previous year. Defending champion Cliff Thorburn got knocked out to John Spencer 4-5 in the first round. But it was best known for Canadian Kirk Stevens's 147 against Jimmy White in the semi-finals, which he made during the 10th frame of the match. The break earned Stevens £10,000 for the 147, £1,000 for the highest break, and a gold award for breaking the record in the tournament. Meanwhile, White won the match 6-5 and went on to win the title for the first and, so far, only time. In front of his home crowd he beat Welshman Terry Griffiths, who had made it to his 4th final in 5 years.
