From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1983 Benson and Hedges Masters took place between January 23 and January 30, 1983 at the Wembley Conference Centre. The Masters had been extended to 7 days as it still stands today and the competition also extended it's players to 16 but not in the form of the Top 16 ranked players as it would start the following year and matches in the Last 16 but 2 were not televised as BBC Television coverage started on January 26. Cliff Thorburn of Canada became the first and as of 2008 the only overseas player to win the competition beating Ray Reardon in the final to win the first of his three titles.
The first round match between Bill Werbeniuk and Alex Higgins made a record crowd at the Conference Centre of 2876.
