- 14 April - Armed with a knife, an unidentified man claiming to be associated with the IRA attempts to hijack a Continental Airlines flight to Libya. He is later persuaded by the co-pilot to surrender to authorities.[citation needed]
- 4 June - John Turnley, leader of the Irish Independence Party, is killed by Loyalists.
- 26 June - Former member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, Miriam Daly, is assassinated.
- 15 October - Ronnie Bunting, a member of the Irish National Liberation Army allegedly involved in the 1979 assassination of a House of Commons member Airey Neave, is killed by unidentified gunmen in his home along with Noel Lyttle. Bunting's wife, Suzanne, is wounded in the attack. Although Bunting's death was claimed by the Ulster Defence Association, members of the INLA claimed involvement by the SAS.
- 17 December - An assassination attempt against Christopher Tugendhat, a delegate of the European Community Commission, is prevented in Brussels, Belgium. Responsibility for the failed assassination is later claimed by the Provisional IRA.
