The 1979 edition of the Orange Bowl featured the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and the Oklahoma Sooners.

Nebraska scored first on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Kurt Sorley to Tim Smith giving Nebraska a 7-0 lead. Oklahoma scored on the last play of the first half as Billy Sims scored on a 3 yard touchdown run tieing the game at 7. In the second quarter, Thomas Lott scored on a 3 yard touchdown run as Oklahoma led 14-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Billy Sims scored on an 11 yard touchdown run as Oklahoma increased its lead to 21-7. Von Schamann's 16 yard field goal increased the lead to 24-7. Todd's 31 yard field goal for Nebraska made it 24-10. Thomas Lott scored on a 2 yard touchdown run as Oklahoma took a 31-10 lead. Berns scored on a 1 yard touchdown run for Nebraska as they came within 31-17. Sorley's 2 yard touchdown pass to Miller made the final score 31-24.
