The 1972 edition of the Orange Bowl decided the National Champion in college football. The game matched the number 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide with the number 2 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. Nebraska thoroughly dominated the contest winning by an impressive 38-6 margin, and was declared unanimously the national champions.

Nebraska scored first on a 2 yard touchdown run by Jeff Kinney taking a 7-0 lead. Johnny Rodgers scored on a 77 yard punt return on the final play of the first quarter, as Nebraska led 14-0. In the second quarter, Jerry Tagge and Gary Dixon added touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards respectively, as Nebraska led 28-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Terry Davis scored on a 3 yard touchdown run making the score 28-6. Nebraska's Rich Sanger kicked a 21 yard field goal at the end of the third quarter, as Nebraska led 31-6. A 1 yard touchdown run by Van Brownson made the final score 38-6.
