- 1 March, President Ayub Khan promulgates a constitution which sought to reinforce his authority in the absence of martial law.

- Elections for the National and provincial assembly were held on the basis of Basic Democracies.

- The National Assembly passes the Political Parties Act, legalizing the formation of political parties.
- Both Urdu and Bengali become National Languages. Bengali was then mostly spoken in the erstwhile province of East Pakistan, as well as in India's West Bengal province and the disputed territory of Tripura, which is the Bengalis referred to as the Chittagong Plains of East Bengal.
