A note for anyone who cares, This is a school PC and it has a blanket IP for over three thousand pupils so its probably best it stays blocked. I use wikipedia reguarly so i decided to point this out (I posted the antitrust trivia in the bil gates article and many webcomics)i supose though now i have to start working on my free periods and editing wikipedia at home :( Great website. Oh BTW i wasnt the user who vandalised that page im just saying a lot of immature people use this IP so it is better blocked - Seth turner (turner338@gmail.com)
- But a permanent block would keep out many honest people. The usual approach is to tighten the warnings and block rigorously but short-termed. If this PC accepts cookies and you always remember to log out, you may create your own user account (might want to do that for at home anyway). Femto 12:13, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blocked 16 times
There ought to be some solution to the vandalism that comes back every time the block expires. Does the school know that it has somebody who is continually vandalising Wikipedia? Is whoever flagged this as a shared IP actually associated with the school, or has he/she/it determined it by some other means? Maybe it's time that it monitored its pupils' Internet access and took disciplinary measures against people messing about. -- Smjg 16:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
- More than 16 times (block log). No, it's not determined further than the good old 'innocent until proven guilty' - at least some of them are, apparently. IP registration info is available here for example for those who know how to read it and what to do with it.
- Perhaps if some non-vandals on this IP read this and could provide us with contact information...? Or even arrange for disciplinary measures themselves, since preventing a more permanent block would be in their own interest? Femto 19:00, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
That said, is it possible to block an IP address only from editing while not logged in? That way, the school's innocent and constructive Wikipedia contributors can still edit - they'll just have to log in first. -- Smjg 16:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
- Contrary to what I thought earlier, no, currently a block also affects all log-in accounts. You may put your vote behind this Wikipedia:Blocking policy proposal to change that though. I see you already put up a long term alert at Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. Other than that, the next thing to try would be to block without further warnings at the first sign of trouble, but just long enough until class is over. Femto 19:00, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- Thanks! I updated the sharedIP note according to Nintenoid's info. (Somebody else will have to contact them, I haven't done an e-mail since I registered my Wikipedia account...) Femto 21:57, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

- No problem. I'm happy to compose an email however I think it would sound better from someone who's been involved with the Wikipedia project a bit longer. My personal opinion is that while there are some genuine contributors it would be worth blocking the IP to prevent distress to those maintaining vandalised pages. Cheers. - Nah, there are worse IPs than this one. This is "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit". It should take a lot more than a few juvenilities a day to permanently deny its fundamental principle to some people. Femto 14:14, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] It's Sawston as well!
By the way, I would like to add that this is the IP address of the school I go to, Sawston Village College in Cambridgeshire, and I've put a template in at the top for it. The school has over 1,000 pupils, many of which are immature, but, there is the odd good edit from here. A long-term block would deny a thousand young people the priviliges of discovering Wikipedia - and see the history for Sawston. I don't know how it's possible for an IP address to refer to more than one school, but they're in the same county and it's definitely mine. I'm trying to introduce my mates to Wikipedia and I really don't want my school blocked for a long-term period as I often make edits during my breaks (Sorry, I'm hooked). Short term blocks will do thanks. Signed --Mark J 16:05, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
