Due to persistent vandalism (see edit log), editing by anonymous users from your school, library or institution's IP address may be currently disabled. You continue to have full access to read the encyclopedia. If you are logged in but still unable to edit, please follow these instructions. To prevent abuse, account creation via this IP address is probably also disabled.
If editing is required for class projects, please have your teacher or network administrator contact us (with reference to this IP address) at unblock-en-l from an email address listed on your school's website. Alternatively, if you have no Internet access at home, you may email us using your school-issued email address, telling us your preferred username. An account will be created for you. Please check on this list that the username you choose has not already been taken.
Thank you.

[edit] Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
The McCanns have not received £1 million and it is defamatory to say so. The Fund has received the money; a very different situation. This is well covered by the page Response to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. TerriersFan 23:28, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Blocking policy
Edinburgh University ip address, no use of blocking this one since it's a different person every time and blocking means missing out on loads of constructive edits on complicated subjects by university schooled people. --194.81.255.254 13:45, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- The over-riding consideration is the protection of the Project. If that means missing out on good edits then so be it. The way forward is for people who wish to contribute positively to create an account. TerriersFan 23:31, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- I totally agree with you, TerriersFan. I think it unlikely we will lose any valid input; experience suggests that constructive contributiors rarely hide behind IP addresses, whereas vandals usually do. Carbonix 23:39, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
- I am an unregistered user and have all of my internet access through the University. I have only recently wanted to create a Wikipedia account as I am a first year student and before now have considered Wikipedia a "nearly finished resource" (Oh how wrong I was!). [Deviation from topic....] Anyway: Now that I want to create an account I cannot BECAUSE of the block, and so am caught in a "Catch-22" situation - I want to edit an article on Wikipedia so I must register, but I cannot register as I am in a blocked IP, thus I must email people on Wikipedia, but I cannot email people because I DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT!! As you can guessed, I am annoyed about this... If possible can you please rectify this. mr dot timothyfoster at mac dot com 12:42, 1 December 2007 (GMT)
- This can be resolved quite straightforwardly. The options are:
- Ask your tutor, or any other person in authority, to send an email to the address in the link in the illustrated box at the bottom of this page, from an email address listed on the institution's website. A Wikipedia account is not needed for this.
- Register on the computer of a friend or relative.
- Register at a Cyber Cafe - see here for example. HTH. TerriersFan 20:08, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's very inconvenient and I find the system rather stupid, but I shall find a way to register using these tips. Thanks again. Timothy mr dot timothyfoster at mac dot com 12:42, 1 December 2007 (GMT)

Sorry, i meant block then, i'm not familiair with the wikipedia terminology for such things considering i have never been blocked before. Anyway. the reason why this ip should be unblocked because it's a large university network. Yes maybe there is still a vandal here but there's also many genuine users. Just like on the internet on a whole, you know there are vandals, you know they haven't stopped vandalising, and yet you still allow anonymous editing, because anonymous editing is what made wikipedia big. And yes people can make accounts and then edit, but the majority of the people don't, just look at the statistics. Besides, vandals can make new accounts as well, and then the only way to stop them is to block ip addresses from making new accounts, and then you still end up with the same problem of excluding thousands of academically schooled people from improving wikipedia for the benefit of stopping one vandal. And isn't the lack of scientists on specific scientific areas the biggest problem of wikipedia? Blocking shared university ips from editing isn't the smartest thing to do then. With a big university network like this the only sane policy is therefore to allow editing and revert the occassional newby vandalism that occurs.
- BTW, this block expires in about 12 hours at this point. Mangojuicetalk 17:10, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
