The 1940 edition to the Sugar Bowl featured the top ranked Texas A&M Aggies, and the fifth ranked Tulane Green Wave. The game was played at Tulane's home field, so it was tecnically a home game for the Green Wave.
Texas A&M took a 1st quarter lead with a 1 yard touchdown run from runninb ack John Kimbrough. He would finish the game with 159 yards rushing on 25 carries. His first rushing touchdown game A&M a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Tulane's Kellogg returned a punt 75 yards for touchdown as Tulane tied it at 7. In the third quarter, Tulane's Butler scored on a 2 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was blocked, as Tulane took a 13-7 third quarter lead. Kimbrough's second rushing touchdown of the game, rallied the Aggies to a 14-13 win.
