  • April 7 - Mahatma Gandhi suspended his campaign of civil disobedience
  • January 15 - There is an 8.4 earthquake in India and Nepal in which more than 10,000 people die
  • G. Edward Lewis discovers 'man-like ape' fossils in Northern India. They are named Ramapithecus and Sugrivapithecus, after Rama and Sugriva.
  • The Reserve Bank of India Act passed
