1927 Crimean earthquakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1927 Crimean earthquakes occurred on June 26 and September 11-12, 1927 in the waters of the Black Sea, hitting the Crimean peninsula. The June earthquake hit with a force of 6-7 on the Richter scale,[1] while the one in mid-September was reported to have been up to 9 on the Richter scale near the city of Yalta.[2]

During the September earthquake, observers reported seeing large fiery flares erupting from the Black Sea ranging from 20 to 500 meters high.[3] These flames were probably caused by the combustion of methane eruptions triggered by the earthquake.[3]

Decades later, the maximal expected earthquake intensity was reestimated from 6 to 9 on the Richter scale, resulting in the abandoning of the construction of the Kerch Nuclear Power Plant after almost 10 years of construction.[4]
