- February 18 - Rancher John Tunstall is killed by a posse, whose members included gunman Charles Wolz, beginning the Lincoln County War.
- March - John Younger, a member of the Younger Gang, is killed by Pinkerton detectives Louis Lull and Jim Duckworth in St. Clair County, Missouri.
- June 18 - Nick Worthington, a well known outlaw throughout New Mexico and Colorado, is killed by residents of Cimarron, New Mexico and killing several men and stealing horses.
- July 19 - McSween gunman Francisco Zamora is killed in a gunbattle during the Lincoln County War.
