1877 VFA season

The 7th May 1877 saw the formation of the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The foundation Senior clubs of the were Albert Park, Carlton, East Melbourne, Essendon, Hotham, Melbourne, St. Kilda & West Melbourne. The Junior section of the VFA originally included such clubs as Ballarat, Hawthorn, Northcote, South Melbourne, Standard, Victoria United, Victorian Railways and Williamstown.

The VFA oversaw revision of the rules and the playing of inter-colonial games. The game flourished in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and even for a time in New Zealand. Unfortunately the VFA and others failed to spread the code and maintain interest in New South Wales and England.

The inaugural VFA Premiership in 1877 was won by the Carlton FC.
