The convention was called to order by Democratic National Committee chairman Augustus Schell. Henry Watterson served as the temporary convention chairman and General John A. McClernand served as permanent convention president.

Samuel J. Tilden was nominated for President on the second ballot. The tally on the first ballot was Tilden 417, Thomas A. Hendricks 140, Winfield Scott Hancock 75, William Allen (governor) 56, Joel Parker 18.[1]

Hendricks was then nominated by acclaimation for Vice President.
