- July 19 - Surveyor William Gosse names the rock now known as Uluru "Ayers Rock" after the Premier of South Australia Henry Ayers.
- September 3 - The town of Cooktown, Queensland is founded after gold is discovered in Georgetown, sparking a gold rush.
