- July 20 – At a meeting in London, Charles William Alcock and The Football Association decide to hold a challenge cup competition the next year. The FA Cup is born with 15 entries, and it remains the oldest cup tournament playing today.
- November 18 – England beat Scotland 2-1 in London.
