- January 14 - An American Confederate paddle steamer, Lelia, sinks off the north Wales coast, with the loss of 18 lives.
- February 1 - The Vale of Neath Railway is amalgamated with the Great Western Railway.
- April 14 - Opening of the Royal Pier at Aberystwyth, built by Eugenius Birch at a cost of £13,600.
- May 28 - The Mimosa sets sail for Patagonia.
- July 28 - The Patagonian colony is founded by Michael D. Jones.
- November 29 - Two men die when a coal train falls into the North Dock at Swansea.
- The only outbreak of yellow fever ever to occur in Britain kills 15 people in Swansea.
