  • 4 May: The Māori language magazine, The Maori Messenger or Ko te Karere Maori stops publishing. It was started in 1849. In 1855, it was revived with a different Māori title.[3]

The Canterbury Jockey Club is formed, the first club of it’s kind in New Zealand.[4] It holds it’s first meeting, at Riccarton Racecourse, in 1855.
