The 184th's higher headquarters is the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in San Diego.

The 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III in early 2005 conducting full spectrum combat operations under the 3rd Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team.
