The regiment is as of February 2007 stateside, however, individual members are in Iraq filling in critical positions in other active duty units or are tasked for border security missions in southern California or to respond to governor call-ups like the October 2007 San Diego Wildfires. The 184th's higher headquarters is the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in San Diego.
The 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III in early 2005 conducting full spectrum combat operations under the 3rd Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team. During its year long deployment the 1-184th Infantry suffered several KIA and WIA, including Col. William Wood, the highest ranking officer killed in combat operations in Iraq.
As of March 2008, Bravo Company 1-184th Infantry is slated to deploy as part of the 1st Battalion, 185th Armor Regiment with the 81st Heavy Brigade Combat Team (United States) to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-10 in August 2008.
