- Thomas Francis Meagher flies the Irish Tricolour in Waterford, the first recorded usage of the flag which is now the national flag of the Republic of Ireland.
- 12 May - Kilkenny railway station opened.[1]
- 22 July - Government suspends habeas corpus, thus Young Irelanders could be imprisoned on proclamation without trial.
- 29 July - Young Irelander Rebellion in County Tipperary unsuccessful.
