• February 25 - Aboriginal bushranger Musquito is hanged at Hobart, Tasmania.
• March 4 - A penal settlement is established on Maria Island, Tasmania.
• June 14 - Van Diemen's Land is separated administratively from New South Wales, it becomes fully independent in December.
• December 3 - Van Diemen's Land becomes independent from New South Wales, the Legislative Council of Tasmania is established and George Arthur becomes Governor.
