  • Potassium is discovered by Sir Humphry Davy, who conducted electrolysis experiments on potash (the word "potassium" is derived from the English words potash ore).
  • Ruthenium, atomic number 44 (named from the Latin, ruthenia, for Russia), is originally discovered by the Polish chemist Sniadecki.
  • Sodium, atomic number 11, is discovered.
