- 1 February - French Revolutionary Wars: France declares war on Britain, the Netherlands and Spain.[1]
- 15 April - The Bank of England issues the first £5 note.[2]
- 23 August - The Board of Agriculture founded.[1]
- 18 September–18 December - French Revolutionary Wars: Siege of Toulon. Admiral Hood's squadron of Royal Navy ships forced to withdraw from Toulon after a successful siege by Napoleon.[1]
