- Publication of Species Plantarum by Linnaeus on May 1, adopted by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature as the formal start date of the scientific classification of plants.
- Benjamin Franklin invents the lightning rod, to ring a bell when struck by lightning, following the 1752 kite/key tests with his 21-year-old son.
