No complex project can be expected to yield satisfactory results without a clear vision of what the goal is – and here I mean what a worthy internet encyclopedia actually looks like – and a plan to reach that goal, which will include a careful inventory of the needed skills and knowledge and some meaningful measures of progress. That vision of the goal must do something that Wikipedia and Wikipedians steadfastly decline to do today, and that is to consider seriously the user, the reader. What is the user meant to take away from the experience of consulting a Wikipedia article? The most candid defenders of the encyclopedia today confess that it cannot be trusted to impart correct information but can serve as a starting-point for research. By this they seem to mean that it supplies some links and some useful search terms to plug into Google. This is not much. It is a great shame that some excellent work – and there is some – is rendered suspect both by the ideologically required openness of the process and by association with much distinctly not excellent work that is accorded equal standing by that same ideology. One simple fact that must be accepted as the basis for any intellectual work is that truth – whatever definition of that word you may subscribe to – is not democratically determined. And another is that talent, whether for soccer or for exposition, is not equally distributed across the population, while a robust confidence is one's own views apparently is. If there is a systemic bias in Wikipedia, it is to have ignored so far these inescapable facts. Robert McHenry taken from User talk:Adam Carr Full article

[edit] Image:Litvinov_and_Hull.jpg

I have tagged Image:Litvinov_and_Hull.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. Calliopejen1 22:18, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Khasbulatov.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Khasbulatov.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 02:51, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Chubais.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Chubais.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:17, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Decommunization in Russia

Hi there. There is no consensus that I can find to support the redirection (IE soft deletion) of the article. Firstly, the article is not about a "foreign language term", the article is about the phenomenon. At best you can say it is about a "concept in a foreign country", and there is no reason we should not have this in our encyclopedia. Even as a term it is not one that has gone without comment in the English language press, as this gooogle news archive search demonstrates. See also 178 references to decolonisation in reference to Russia in printed books.

Kindly either stop blanking the page (and redirecting) or nominate the article for AfD with a recommendation to delete and redirect. Lobojo (talk) 11:50, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Very good, thank you for your contributions. Then I have a suggestion, I believe we have enough references to elaborate more on Saddam's relations with the CIA, whether it is on how they helped him in the coup, or during the Iraq-Iran war, how about creating a separate article for that? Note: making changes in chunks is easier for other editors to track. Imad marie (talk) 06:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

As a serious editor of Saddam Hussein, what do you think of this article: User:Imad marie/Saddam and CIA ? Imad marie (talk) 10:28, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I wikipedia Russian party and write an article Saddam Hussein. Can I ask you? could you download photos of Saddam Hussein article (section Rise to power) at vikisklad. Thank you very much. Талех

There is a CIA activities in the Near East, North Africa, South and Southwest Asia article with an Iraq section organized chronologically. In the interest of keeping concepts together, I'd encourage putting at least basic material in this sub-article of the main CIA page. It makes perfect sense to have a separate article on US relations with Saddam that did not involve the CIA (e.g., Defense, State, White House). It's also not unreasonable to have a multi-year Saddam section under the Iraq section in the CIA sub-article. I'd hate to have articles proliferate so there might be multiple articles giving different information on this topic. Howard C. Berkowitz (talk) 16:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Seale-bobby.jpg. 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.

However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content.
