- 4 August - War of the Spanish Succession: English forces under Sir George Rooke capture Gibraltar.[1]
- 2 August - War of the Spanish Succession: At the Battle of Blenheim, English troops under John Churchill, the Earl of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy defeat Franco-Bavarian army.[1]
- 13 August - French and English fleets clash off Málaga, causing heavy casualties in both sides but without sinking any ships.
