- 30 January
- King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland is beheaded in London.[1]
- Prince Charles Stuart declares himself King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland. At the time all three Kingdoms had not recognised him as ruler.
- 15 August - Admiral Robert Blake blockades Prince Rupert to allow Oliver Cromwell to land in Dublin and begin the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
- 11 September - Cromwell takes Drogheda.[1]
- Confederate Ireland defeat as Kilkenny falls to Cromwell
- Carrick-on-Suir taken by stealth by Cromwellian forces after they discovered an undefended gate.
