- 8 May - Battle of Farsetmore, fought near Letterkenny in Donegal, Shane O'Neill, chief of the O’Neills of Tyrone, is defeated and the O’Donnells free themselves from O’Neill overlordship.
- Shane O'Neill is killed by the MacDonnells near Cushendun[1]. His severed head is sent to the government in Dublin and he is buried in Glenarm.
