That congregation "eventually apologized to the Nu'Chul Nuth Tribal Council for the United Church participation in residential schools", indeed, but that apology did not address any of the deaths of any of the children attending the Alberni Residential (or any other) School, so in no way can you claim that "they did exactly what Annett wants them to do in relation to the past". They did not. (That very apology, by the way, was loudly and angrily rejected by several of the survivors present) He and so many others are still waiting for a full accounting of the fate of every single child that died in every single one of these institutions. According the the government's own documents, included in Hidden From History, death rates in schools across the country, decade after decade, ranged between 20% - 70%. Every new survivor I meet, I hear of yet another death. None of these have been addressed and these eyewitnesses and survivors are quickly dying off. So, while the UCC certainly "is currently involved in settling residential school lawsuits and litigation", it does not follow that "the United Church agrees with all work which holds the past to account". Where are the bodies of those children? How did they die? Who is responsible? Will they ever be brought home for a proper burial? I would want any child of mine returned and answers given. Simple humanity.
