Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did to Jaywalking. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. --Wikidudeman (talk) 15:03, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Dear Wikidudeman, I'm new to Wikipedia so I ask for your patience and welcome your advice. However I am disturbed by your hasty allegation of vandalism. I recently edited "Jaywalking" in the spirit that Wikipedia appears to celebrate: a free and open collaboration in pursuit of accuracy. My recent edit on "jaywalking" was made entirely in this spirit, and I can't see how anyone could imagine otherwise. I was not experimenting. I note Wikipedia's advice on its editing tutorial "If you add information to a page, please provide references, because unreferenced facts are subject to removal." Unlike most of the editors of the jaywalking article, I cited a published source which was based on primary-source research and which was published in a peer-reviewed journal. I removed three undocumentable inaccuracies only because the historical record shows them to be mistaken (1. a jay was not a nube, but a rube; 2. cars were not new to rural people visiting cities, rather rural people were much more likely to drive than city people in 1910; 3. the original version said that traffic signals were a new concept to rural people visiting cities, but when the word "jaywalking" was coined there were no traffic signals in cities at all). I am troubled by your hasty reverts and by the accusation, which seem contrary to Wikipedia's editorial policies: "Wikipedia encourages an atmosphere of friendliness and openness," and "The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should always assume good faith on the part of other editors. Do not assume that someone is acting out of spite or malice." Unwarranted accusations and reverts of documented material tend to deter people like me who accept Wikipedia's ideals and its invitation to contribute in the spirit of making Wikipedia better. I have no objection to leaving the jaywalking article in its original form, provided you can document the material you restored. For my part, I will add nothing to it that I cannot document. If I add documented material, I ask you not to remove it. I will show you the same courtesy.

[edit] Re: The warning about Igor Stravinsky
Hi. Thanks for leaving a message on my talk page. If you take a look at the message about vandalism to Igor Stravinsky you'll see it was left in November 2006. It is likely that your current IP address was allocated to another person at that time, who was the vandal concerned. This will happen because some IP addresses change over time. If you want to avoid getting spurious messages because of a shared IP address, I suggest you create an account - its free, and very easy to do. There are many advantages to having an account here. This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. Registering also hides your IP address.
