You are welcome to continue editing articles without logging in, but you may wish to create an account. Doing so is free, requires no personal information, and provides several benefits. If you edit without a username, your IP address (124.168.215.205) is used to identify you instead.

In any case, I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your IP address (or username if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question and then place {{helpme}} before the question on your talk page. [edit] March 2008

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button Image:Signature_icon.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. Jaysweet (talk) 14:29, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

[edit] The not signing thing

First of all, the sarcastic "Sherlock" remark comes close to violating WP:CIVIL. Please behave in a civil manner at all times.

Secondly, do you not see how confusing it makes it if you don't at least have some kind of thing to denote where your comment ends and the next person's comment begins? At least sign it with like "--Me" or something so that it's not so confusing.

Thirdly, regarding that it should be "automatic," there are sound technical reasons why the signature is not automatic. For example, what if I wanted to rearrange some sections on my Talk page, because somebody had made a comment at the top and I want to put new comments on the bottom? If the sig was automatic, then suddenly I'd be signing the other person's comment. Or what if I want to fix a typo in a comment I already made? Again, if the sig is automatic, then there'd be a signature in the middle of my previous comment, and that's also not good. In fact, those are the reason why the !nosign! feature exists -- it is not to avoid signing your posts, but it is to prevent SineBot from adding a signature to edits that do not actually add a new comment.

Fourthly, I am not at all convinced that signing posts is optional, and I am seeking clarification of that. At the very least, it is a violation of WP:ETIQUETTE.

I do not mean to pick on you. I just want to be able to read the Talk pages without being confused over who said what. Thanks! --Jaysweet (talk) 15:09, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Signatures are an important part of talk page conversations. I hope you'll reconsider your practice in light of the explanation Jaysweet provided above. — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:11, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
