[edit] Welcome!

Hi there! Welcome to Wikipedia! It seems you have been very busy over the last couple of days, keep up the great work! I hope you like it here and stick around. If you want, you can drop us a note at Wikipedia:New user log to introduce yourself.

A few tips before you start doing a lot of editing:

  • When you post something on a talk/discussion page, you can sign your name by using three tildes (" ~~~ ") for your username and four (" ~~~~ ") for your username and a timestamp.
  • If you ever find yourself with nothing to do on Wikipedia, have a look at the Community Portal, you'll find that there's always something happening.

If you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hi, don't hesitate to write to me on my talk page.

Happy editing! - Akamad Merry Christmas to all! 12:20, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Combat System

Marcus, Yes the change was a good one in that particular instance, good move. BTW: You have done an excellent job with the other Martial Arts articles and stubs.

FrankWilliams 05:09, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] JKD

Marcus, see the discussion page on Jeet Kune Do (List of Styles) section as you asked for references to the JKD statement.

[edit] Hello!

I've noticed your edits too...keep up the great work! Enjoy the holiday season, and Merry Christmas! --HappyCamper 15:54, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! I've got some spare time so i've been wanting to improve on some areas of interest to me. I hope I don't get addicted to Wikipedia =D ---Marcus- 15:58, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
Hehehe :-) Well, just in case, this might come in handy! See you around! --HappyCamper 16:01, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
I hope i won't be going to support groups saying "Hi i'm Marcus and im a wikipediholic" >=) ---Marcus- 16:10, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words, sir! Looking at your interests I'm sure we'll see each other about. I've thought about a pain-compliance article myself, but have never managed to find the energy you bring... Happy Wiking! Rorybowman 23:35, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Oh no! Now you're onto my methods! Very nice to see your ongoing work with this. Yay, Marcus! Rorybowman 22:02, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] shootfighting article

Wow. Good job. Thanks for the rewrite and clearing up the confusion. --Janto 19:18, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much =) ---Marcus- 23:51, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Armlock

Hi Marcus, I appreciate your contributions so far to the various articles. To avoid duplicate copies, I suggest leaving only a brief summary of the techniques under armlock, and leave or move the details to their respective articles. Keep up the good work! Shawnc 01:17, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Alternatively, we could merge all the armlock-related topics to armlock, but the reference section may get crowded though. Shawnc 01:23, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Great work on this one, sir! My, but you have had a busy week. Nicely done. You speak Swedish, yes? Might I trouble you to visit [1] and fill in some of the chronology at Talk:Eric_A._Sykes. If you'd like to move it into the main article that would be great, but I don't want to get the readings on any of these events wrong. This is one of the fullest chronologies I've seen of Sykes, having not found any printed biographies. Happy new year! Rorybowman 02:38, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] References

I've put up some tags in the articles requesting for references. Please provide some citations for each page if you can find them, thanks. Shawnc 01:53, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, ideally there should be a footnotes/references subsection, or at least some external links that show where the content of each article is taken from. I find these guides to be helpful: Wikipedia:Citing sources, Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Verifiability. Shawnc 12:55, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Catch wrestling

I can swing by and take a look at this later in the week. Since I need to be doing some actual work this week I probably won't have as much time for Wikipedia and am currently doing a rewrite over on hunting but I can put it on the list of next projects. I won't tell you that one of the main reasons I list catch wrestling as an interest is because my BJJ is so bad! 8^) I'll try to give it a good once-over sometime this week. Happy Wiking! Rorybowman 23:45, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, sir! You can check out the fruits of your labor over at Eric A. Sykes if you like, and hope you will be able to admire my changes to Catch wrestling. Without getting into some pretty obscure written records, I'm not sure how much better I can do. I went to the (non-technical) public library this evening, but the few books they had on the history of American wrestling were pretty vague about this period. Thanks again for your kind help with the Sykes article! Rorybowman 04:47, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Howdy, Marcus! Were those your pics added to Catch wrestling? If so, they need to be attributed. Are you familiar with the use of the "Upload file" area on WikiCommons? A link is in the "toolbox" sidebar to the bottom left of each page. Also, I did a slight edit over at MMA to clarify that not all hybrid MA's are combatives, with a clean and clear second example, Kajukenbo. Cheers! - Rorybowman 03:42, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 21% for major edits and 32% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 22:00, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Asphyxia through hypobaric, Altitude, conditions

Hello, well done on asphyxia edits. You may want to add anoxia, really hypoxia, through hypobaric conditions (as opposed to hyperbaric) such as altitude. Pilots can go unconcious on aircraft depressurisation as low as 20,000', although with practice and aclimatisation people climb to 26,000'+ and remain both conscious and active. Death will occur fairly quickly at 30,000'. Sorry no reliable detail on the exact altitudes. Some stuff under high altitude chamber. Ex nihil 07:10, 1 March 2006 (UTC) Also need to add carbon monoxide effect on haemoglobin oxygen displacement under chemical causes.Ex nihil 07:22, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Anatomical terms of motion

Hello. I think the all the changes needed for the split of anatomical terms of motion into their own page are complete. I noticed that you did a lot of work on the set of terms that were located at Anatomical terms of location; I was just wondering if you had any additional suggestions or comments. --Dcfleck 13:49, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chokehold

Why would you get rid of the chokehold article? Especially without any discussion? I know you've done some work on the strangling article (which should actually probably be called "Strangulation") but the connotations of a chokehold are not at all the same as strangling. Strangling is not making someone go unconscious; it is used to kill. See Webster's definition, here. It's the same as drowning; drowning is actual death by water, not just near-death, unconsciousness, or choking.

The two are quite different and there's no reason to put them into one article, at least not on a whim. I'd recommend putting a merge tag on it and opening a discussion. Kafziel 21:21, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Strangling doens't have to be fatal, as is also stated in definition b in the link you posted. However most online dictionaries are not anatomically correct in what mechanism causes death, as they always point to restriction of the air supply, although it is the restriction of the blood supply that is the main mechanism of death. A more accurate description and definition is given in Hanging Injuries and Strangulation by William Ernoehazy. Oxford Dictionary of English has a more accurate definition: "to squeeze or constrict the neck, especially so as to cause death". The term 'chokehold' is misleading, since it usually has nothing to do with impeding the air supply such as in choking. I've written a separate article on strangling, and rewritten the chokehold article. I haven't changed the term 'chokehold' into the more accurate 'stranglehold', because chokehold is the term used by most martial arts. Strangling and strangulation both scored approximately the same number of hits on google, and in such a case it is Wikipedia policy to name articles in the gerund (-ing) form(ref). However, i'm glad you brought it up because now I noticed that the term "strangle" scored 50% more hits than strangling, so I might need to correct that. ( ---Marcus- 14:23, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Boxing pic

Yes, go ahead and nominate that main image! There may be objections because one boxer's head is cut off, but I'd support. The fresco has less chance, because it is so heavily restored (i.e. little of the original is left). BTW, there's a list on the boxing page that needs a thorough cleanup! --Janke | Talk 06:48, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hi Marcus, thank you for the nice barnstar. On the other hand, you have contributed just as much in the area of martial arts, so keep up the good work! Shawnc 01:30, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Erwin Ballarta

I'm looking for people who might be interested in helping to improve the Erwin Ballarta article. I see you mostly edit techniques and systems in martial arts, but this bio may be interesting to you even if you don't want to pitch in. Check it out. — ApolloCreed (comment) (talk) 02:59, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

that took ages for me to write! (Nicola Evans article) And it's funny! Phillip Dickinson 21:51, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sig

In 'My preferences,' I put this in Nickname:

and then checked 'Raw signature.' There's more information at Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. Happy editing, Tom Harrison Talk 22:19, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I.S.49

Thanks for reminding me to put some references. I am currently working on the page so it is now "under construction". I will make sure to include any references i can. Tut74749 22:32, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] so-called "vandalism"

What "nonsense" have I added? I've only removed a few bad-faith deletion tags. --68.190.51.99 02:19, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

See User talk:68.190.51.99 for further reference.---Marcus- 02:25, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] reverting edits

The edit to Frederik Valeur which you reverted looks legitimate (if badly written), once you take in mind the content of the article. Please be careful. --Fuzzie (talk) 10:14, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, that was my mistake in case it it is correct. Been scanning for vandals for several hours, so when you see "starring in over 50 gay movies." The vandalism detector goes off :D ---Marcus- 10:17, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Apparently it was just a user vanity page, it has now been deleted.---Marcus- 10:47, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
I noticed your speedy deletion (thanks), and I can understand your revert, just wanted to warn you that it could well have been a legitimate edit. --Fuzzie (talk) 10:49, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

ok then fair enough. Though, what do you mean by "encyclopedic"? I suppose the intention to be funny over-powered me. Phillip Dickinson 20:37, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Moving disambiguation pages

Often the " (disambiguation)" is superfluous, see Malplaced disambiguation pages. So there's not need to move the dab page.--Commander Keane 07:14, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

We don't actually need to delete the "(disambiguation)" links, we need to keep them redirecting to the dab page. If someone wants to link to the disambiguation page then they use the "(disambiguation)". So could you remove all those speedy deletion requests? It doesn't matter much if any get deleted though.
Normal users can fix some malplaced dab pages, but the current list only contains ones for admins (due to complex page histories).--Commander Keane 08:14, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Leifern

I notice that over at requests for deletion: Boyd Haley Leifern shared with us that he guesses it is very difficult for you to understand (the concept)... since you dared to have a different view from his. He is being steadily more unpleasant and I have in mind an RFC on his behaviour. He is non-objective on a small number of topics, Mercury and Autism being two of them (or perhaps in his view only one). Midgley 08:56, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

To avoid cluttering things up further by defending myself, see User:Leifern/Accusations by Midgley --Leifern 19:37, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cutman

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your help with my cutman article! One minor request - if you see something that you can't find sources for, could you just mark it with {{fact}} instead of deleting it? That way, it'll be easier for me to locate those instances and add references.

Thanks! -CasualFighter 17:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Shooto

I've provided an explanation on the talk page as you requested. I hope that helps. If you need any more help, please feel free to ask! - Tangotango 12:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I've clarified some more on the talk page. - Tangotango 12:43, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Please see the talk page. - Tangotango 13:05, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I think your new version explains it well. I've just removed the "shu-to" pronunciation, because in this case it's always shū-to. - Tangotango 13:36, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Today, there was a merger of Category:Martial Artist Wikipedians into Category:Wikipedian martial artists. This resulted in a userbox {{User:TonyTheTiger/Userboxes/Martialartist}} being added to the category. This userbox is available to you. TonyTheTiger 19:55, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Catch as catch can

Would you mind if I revert your redirect from Catch as catch can to Catch wrestling? I came looking for the idiom, not the wresting style. SB (talk) 18:20, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
